“Breaking Barriers: Challenges Authors Encounter in Publishing”

Have you ever tried submitting your manuscript to a well-known publishing house? If you have, then you already know how challenging it can be just to get your story noticed. In the United States alone, large publishing houses receive nearly one million manuscripts each year—yet fewer than 2% ever make it to publication.

That means the vast majority of writers are left with two options: shelve their manuscripts indefinitely or turn to self-publishing with little to no guidance.

The reality is, getting your story heard is not easy—it’s often a harsh process. Manuscripts may be rejected for being “underdeveloped” or simply because they don’t align with current market trends. While traditional publishers do provide editing and revision support, those services are expensive and come with no guarantee of publication. Even then, publishing houses tend to prioritize their established, big-name authors, leaving very little space for fresh voices to break through. And with long turnaround times, new writers are often left waiting months—or even years—for a response.

This leaves new and underrepresented authors to fend for themselves in the world of self-publishing. While self-publishing provides more control, it also introduces new challenges: marketing and distribution hurdles, lack of visibility in a crowded market, and potential legal and copyright concerns.

In short, while the dream of publishing is alive and well, the path to achieving it is filled with roadblocks. For emerging authors, the journey requires not just creativity, but also resilience, strategy, and the right support system to truly bring their stories to life.
